The Bowen Technique
Research shows that a staggering three in four people will suffer back pain during their lifetime, ranging from brief twinges to long term back problems.
Sarah Pluves, who has recently joined our team of therapists at Natural Health, was one such sufferer, experiencing back pain for nearly twenty years. Sarah is a keen runner but running made the pain worse, with a sharp pain spreading from her left hip down to her knee.
But three years ago she discovered the Bowen Technique, a very gentle remedial therapy that helps to re-align and balance the body. After just three treatments her pain had gone completely and she’s never looked back, even training to become a Bowen practitioner herself.
The Bowen Technique
Bowen is one of the fastest growing therapies in Europe. A typical Bowen treatment will take 45 minutes to one hour. The moves themselves are sets of subtle but dynamic rolling moves made by thumbs and fingers, over muscles and soft tissue, at specific points on the body. The moves can be done direct on skin but can easily be done through light clothing. A distinguishing feature of Bowen is that the therapist leaves the room for a few minutes in between sets of moves. These short breaks allow the body and nervous system to absorb the effect of the moves straight away and initiate the healing process. Many people find the treatment so relaxing they actually fall asleep.
Being a holistic treatment, it’s not so much the symptom that is being treated, but the whole person. It’s not unusual to find a session for someone with, say, an ankle problem includes moves around the shoulder and neck. And it’s very often someone will find that along with improvement in their presenting condition, perhaps also their back ache has disappeared or their headaches have reduced.
For those who feel the need to be pummelled and manipulated by other body therapies, Bowen seems, at first glance, to be too light to be produce their desired results. But with Bowen, less is more - the moves may be light but the results are strong and with Bowen, it really is a case of no pain but lots of gain.
Often only three or four treatments are required to achieve a positive result, even with chronic pain. Many have top-ups to keep the body at optimum levels.
It’s not only muscular-skeletal issues that can be addressed. Whilst Bowen excels in this area, particularly for back pain, frozen shoulder, stiff neck and knee problems, to name but a few, Bowen can also provide relief from such conditions as IBS, tinnitus, headaches, fertility issues, asthma and hay fever.
Being such a gentle therapy means it is very suitable for use on babies and children. Colic, bed-wetting and ADHD are some of the childhood conditions that have been improved by the application of Bowen. In contrast, more robust moves can be used on athletes with a sports injury.
